Online Tie Retailer Cheap-Neckties.com Takes a Historic Look at Men’s Fashion on Board the Titanic

posted by:

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 21, 2012

Cheap-Neckties.com, a well-known online retailer of ties and mens accessories, today published a retrospective highlighting mens fashion aboard the RMS Titanic. The piece comes in response to the 100th anniversary of the ships sinking, which occurred at 2:20 am on April 15th, 1912.

The sinking of the Titanic remains one of the most memorable disasters in world history, says Cheap-Neckties.com founder Hendrik Pohl. Wed be remiss not to pay homage to the ship and her passengers, and what better way to do so than to highlight the fashion found aboard the Titanic?

The piece highlights elements of style found in first, second and third-class passengers aboard the ship. Men in first-class displayed the utmost in luxurious attire, with second and third-class individuals providing stark contrast to their wealthy counterparts. As a result, the Titanic saw a great deal of different types of style during its short journey, ranging from elegant tailcoats above deck to ragged britches and torn shirts below.

One of the most interesting elements of the Titanic disaster was the class disparity that was so apparent on-board, says Pohl. At the time, those who exhibited the utmost in mens fashion tended to be wealthy individuals, with working-class immigrants dressing in whatever they could find to put on their backs. The result was a highly diverse grouping of people all contained on a single sinking ship; perhaps one of the more interesting aspects of the tragedy.

Considered by many to be the physical manifestation of the confidence and luxury that characterized the Gilded Age, the Titanic was thought to be completely unsinkable. Upon colliding with an iceberg at 11:40 pm on April 14th, however, the ship quickly came into disrepair and sank within a matter of hours.

First-class passengers aboard the Titanic embodied everything about the era, says pohl. This was a time when men of all classes truly put effort into the way they dressed. While theres no denying the fact that the ships sinking was a sobering shock to the attitude of the wealthy at the time, its incredibly interesting to look back on an era where luxury and excess were given so much attention. Since our customers tend to be very interested in mens fashion, we wanted to highlight the differences between not only the classes aboard the ship, but the way men approached fashion then in comparison to today.
