Ironing could be named the worst household chore. Have you been using a service to iron your clothes? Most people do not learn how to properly iron their clothes until they are out of college. This article will teach you tips and techniques about ironing that will have you ironing like a professional in no time!

Step 1

Gather your clean clothes and preheat your iron. Add water if you are going to use steam. I use steam on all my cotton clothes. Look at the tags on your clothes to find the fabric content. Match that fabric content to your heat settings on your iron. This is very important to get right as some clothes do not tolerate heat well. For example, silks and polyester can be permanently damaged or melted.

Step 2

For a dress shirt, start ironing from the collar. This is the most important part of the shirt and has to be ironed with care. Stretch the collar on the ironing board and press it correctly. Then, iron the sleeves. Fold the sleeve in half with the seam on one side. Gently hand press until you get it to lay flat and your seam is in the center top of your sleeve. Iron the sleeves by gently swaying back and forth to get a good clean crease.

Next you iron the body of the shirt. Always start from one side of the shirt and then move around the shirt slowly to the other side removing all the wrinkles from the shirt as you go. After you finish ironing, immediately hang the shirt on a hanger. Button the top and center button.

Step 3

The pants! In the same manner as the shirt, begin with the top part of the pant. Unbutton and gently fit over the narrow end of your ironing board. The circumference of the waistband is the most important area; iron it starting at one side working your way around the pants to the other side. Now, place the pant legs in parallel position on the board in the same direction and iron them. Be careful no to pull and tug on your pants. This could distort the size and look of your pants. When you are done, hang on a hanger immediately keeping your center crease. You should be able to see your side seams, not the crease.

I hope this requested article has helped teach you how to iron clothes properly.
