Beside your myriad of t-shirts, dress clothes, and mismatched socks, you probably found a pair of black pants. That’s because everybody has a pair of black dress pants, and for good reason.
A good pair of black pants will never fail. They match just about everything in your closet, from a frumpy old t-shirt that you bought in college to that expensive Armani shirt you bought when in Milan. It doesn’t matter if it’s the freezing chill of winter, or the boiling heat of summer, a pair of black pants is essential to any wardrobe.
But you can’t just simply find any old pair of black pants; you must find the right pair for you. This begins with some simple tips.
For women, your search should start with the cut. Ideally, a pair of black pants should have a flare or straight leg cut. Both of these styles are flexible for either the workplace or for a raucous Saturday night. The waist cut doesn’t matter; find a waist cut that supports your own midriff.
Accessorizing is essential when wearing black pants, since their inherent simplicity will not bring about attention on its own. You need some sort of contrast to really bring your look together. Consider a wide belt that has a vibrant pattern, such as a leopard or tiger prints. With other accessories, such as earrings and a watch, try to keep them simple and neutral. When it comes to a blouse, you want to continue this contrast with a bright colored top; perhaps a bright blue would be fitting.
Mens black pants should be worn differently. Men have it easy compared to women. Men only need to wear black pants (any cut is acceptable) with a shirt that has limited contrast, such as gray or other muted colors. Layering is also a good idea as long as you don’t look too over-cumbered. Consider a light blazer over a sweater; but a simple pair of black pants with a well tailored shirt will be a successful look.
Albeit, there is not one single way to look good when wearing black pants; it’s a pretty safe way to ensure a good look (or at least a look that may go unnoticed). Even if you decide not to follow these guidelines, you will probably not fail when wearing black pants; they are simply too easy to look good in!
Call me old fashioned or whatever, I just felt that it was my duty as a fashion designer to dedicate an article to the classic black pants!
