Mayme Clayton Library & Museum in Culver City, California, has recently discovered an unusual book in the impressive collection of artifacts from his late mother African American. The little cloth-bound book, entitled “Slave Songs of the United States, has a publication date of 1867 and contains a collection of 136 songs planting. This could be the first African-American spirituals book ever published? HISTORY DETECTIVES host Wes Cowan views historian music to Los Angeles to discover the coded messages and melodies that have laid the foundations of modern blues and gospel songs in protest and future generations. Meeting with Washington, DC Howard University Choir for a special concert selections from slave songs sung in the traditional style of spirituals 1800. Exploration of historical objects and stories behind them, a detective story around the country to deepen the legends, folklore and personal histories to discover potentially extraordinary objects of the everyday lives of American homes, cities and towns.
